What an empty parking lot tells us about safety

A driver who cannot find a safe place to stop is carrying a risk that no rulebook measures.

Every driver learns early that a trip does not end when the clock says it can. It ends when the truck is parked, the wheels are set, and there is somewhere safe to sleep. When that space is nowhere to be found, the whole day changes.

A driver circling a highway at midnight is not chasing a shortcut. They are absorbing a risk that the system never writes down. The cost shows up as lost sleep, skipped meals, and a decision made at 2 a.m. that nobody in an office had to make.

This is the kind of problem research can treat honestly. Not as a complaint, but as a pattern with a location, a time of day, and a person carrying it night after night.

Before we debate what should change, it is worth asking what the empty lots are already telling us.
